<ABSTRACT>
There are many models of intercultural communicative competence (ICC),
with differing emphases and terminologies. However, they commonly involve
cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions, and often include
specific competences related to discourse, pragmatics and linguistic and
cultural diversity. If one considers phenomena such as English as a lingua
franca (ELF) along with insights from research fields such as
intercultural, discursive and L2 pragmatics, and second language
acquisition (SLA), one can select a model of ICC that incorporates all or
most of these standpoints in conceptually coherent and potentially useful
ways, and explore the links through empirical data. In this talk, the
presenter will report on his recent research and teaching activities
related to ICC and L2 interactional competences, mainly employing
conversation-analytic (CA) principles, and supported by a KAKENHI grant.
Examples from the presenter’s own data and student-generated data will be
shown, demonstrating through verbal and non-verbal means such competences
and practices as conversational repair, topic management, face management,
shifting participation frameworks and the spontaneous building and
adjusting of pragmatic and interactional norms, all of which are
significant skills in intercultural communication. We will also explore
whether ICC components such as “discovering new cultural information”,
“skills of intercultural interpretation” and “critical cultural awareness”
can be empirically identified or even “re-specified” through a CA-based
approach.

<BIO DATA>

interests are mainly intercultural communicative competence and
conversation analysis, though he has also carried out quantitative
