The research participants work for a Japanese leading construction contractor, which provides English language training before dispatching its employees overseas. The data consists of recordings of talk-in-interaction both in the classroom and workplace as well as focus-group and individual interviews with the participants, the teachers, and the program coordinators. Analysing their actual interactions and attitudes in academic and professional settings, the present research first points out the gap between what is taught and how it is taught in the classroom, and what is valued in the workplace communication. Secondly, it reveals how professionals in these specific contexts communicate collaboratively and creatively for the sake of job success and efficiency. Thirdly, the participants are found to have ambivalent attitudes towards their communication in English. That is, while these ELF speakers regard English as a mere tool and prioritise the content of the message, they at times defer to native-speaker norms. This seems to be because it is beneficial for their business or owing to their past educational experience. Finally, some pedagogical implications of the findings will be discussed.365_2.html (attatchment)(tag is disabled)
