Narrative tenses have been of great interest in the field of narratology, and the use of the present tense tends to be theoretically studied but much less frequently discussed in lexico-grammatical terms. This paper analyses contemporary present-tense fiction via a corpus approach by comparing lexis and structures using two corpora: one consisting of present-tense narratives and another of past-tense narratives. It will be demonstrated that present-tense narrative has more lexical and syntactic characteristics which are similar to spoken discourse than past-tense fiction. What becomes apparent is that present-tense narrative seems to share the tendency of ‘colloquialisation’ found in written discourse by having: (1) more finite verbs and verb phrases, (2) a greater reliance on pronouns, (3) fewer proper nouns and adjectives, and (4) more present progressives. This paper a! lso discusses how the use of the present tense affects the management of viewpoint in narrative by relating its lexical and structural characteristics to the presentation of characters’ speech and thoughts. <BIO DATA> Reiko Ikeo is Professor of linguistics at the commerce department, Senshu University. With interest in stylistics and discourse analysis, her research focuses on speech and thought presentation in fictional and journalistic texts. Her current project involves the corpus-based analysis of speech and thought presentation in contemporary present-tense fiction.
