Yet, while contemporary linguistic analysis emphasizes the multiple indexical possibilities of linguistic items, far less attention has been paid to the ways in which broader discursive structures themselves are sites of contention and reformulation. This talk interrogates the social possibilities of (re)-framing in discourse. Analyzing the socio-pragmatic alignment strategies of futsuu ‘regular’ university students, it argues that resistance to broad social discourses is frequently indirect and that its directionality is not always from the margins to the center but may proceed from an unmarked ‘center’. Analysis of linguistic elements stereotypically associated with contemporary youth speech including mitai na ‘be like’, shi and to iu ‘what is called’ demonstrates how these disparate elements can change the indexicality of the stance objects with respect to which speakers align themselves by linking such objects to other discourses or by framing such objects in terms of quotidian (everyday) practice. The results of this talk underscore the importance of attending to the social and interpersonal aspects of linguistic elements that are frequently analyzed from a purely functional pragmatics perspective and emphasizes that stance-framing and re-framing exists within broader social frameworks. <BIO DATA> Judit Kroo is a Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow at Vassar College and received her doctorate from Stanford University. Her research focuses on younger Japanese adults’ navigation of liminal spaces between youth and adulthood.
