[Special Lecture] Affection-based face (情面) and its interpersonal functions Prof. RAN Yongping (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies) Abstract: Face, emotion and relational work are closely interwoven, their interrelationship needs to be further explored in different social interactions. In Chinese society it is more generally accepted that creating or maintaining interpersonal relationships (guanxi, 關係) is heavily based on everyday renqing (人情, lit. favor/doing a favor ) and mianzi (face, 面子) practices, otherwise interpersonal relationships are most likely to be damaged. Drawing from the Chinese data of interpersonal conflicts and their dispute mediation, this presentation analyzes how qingmian (情面, lit. affection-based face) is interactionally damaged and then reestablished between the participants in Chinese context, on the basis of a qingmian-threat Regulation Model (QTR) (Ran & Zhao 2018, Ran 2018), specifically the focus is put on how qingmian is interactionally achieved and how it coordinates with social actions of renqing and mianzi and finally harmony is fostered. For the implication, some refinement of the concept of face (for instance, by Arundale 2006, 2010) is proposed, thus providing new insights into culture-specific face as well as the dynamics of interpersonal relationship management. In this study, topic transition is an umbrella term which covers both a shift in topic (topic shift) and a change in topic (topic change), in accordance with the relationship that exists between the new and previous topics. Furthermore, by considering the sequential position at which topic transition occurs, this phenomenon can be classified as either non-disruptive or disruptive transition. Topic transition in the two-party Mandarin conversations which were collated for this study is selfattentive in nature. To compensate for the suddenness of a transition, the person implementing the transition uses the free-standing interjection ei as a signal to indicate that an upcoming transition is about to take place, thereby downgrading the suddenness of a topic transition in Mandarin conversations. ▼ DO NOT REPLY to this e-mail.
