2021年度 第二回JACET談話行動研究会

＜Abstract＞
When, how, and why do we gesture? Or what processes shape and organise our impulse to gesture with speech? My answer to these questions came through a decade-long gesture study of spoken language negation identified in videoed conversations between people in a range of settings and speaking different languages. Microanalysis of negative utterances showed that aspects of gestures were sensitive to grammatical processes such as negative node, scope, and focus of negation; subtle spatial construals of negation as absence, distance, or removal were likewise bound up with gesture and adaptive to the interactive environment. In this talk I hope to engage the audience with some indicative examples of these grammar-gesture phenomena and discuss their implications for understanding gesture in language and communication.
＜Bio＞
Simon Harrison is assistant professor in the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong, having previously held positions in China, France, and Germany. His research explores relational and embodied understandings of language and communication in naturally occurring settings, adopting a particular focus on gestures. Simon is author of The Impulse to Gesture: Where Language, Bodies, and Minds Intersect (2018, CUP) and co-author with David Fleming of Chinese Urban Shi-nema: Cinematicity, Society, and Millennial China (2020, Palgrave).
