Selfhood among Younger Japanese Adults in Rural Tohoku

Abstract
This talk presents the preliminary results of ongoing fieldwork among
younger Japanese adults engaged in counterurban community building in
rural Tohoku, particularly Akita and Fukushima Prefectures and
considers the discursive strategies through which younger adults
narrate their understanding of and alignments towards their own
participation in the context of these counterurbanization movements.
Preliminary results suggest younger adults locate the practice of
building counterurban communities as the construction of an
alternative world within the broader sociopolitical and socioeconomic
structures, where such world-building becomes the locus of identity
performance: in other words, making a new community maps onto the
making of a new self. In this regard, the findings of this study offer
an alternative perspective to widespread accounts of younger Japanese
adults as politically disengaged in comparison to previous
generations. It suggests that younger adults are rather redefining
political action in terms of local community building, where such
alternative communities offer pathways for indirectly pushing back
against dominant ideological structures.
Bio
Judit Kroo is Assistant Professor Japanese Linguistics and Comparative
Cultural Studies at Arizona State University and a Senior Scientist at
the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. Her research
considers the role that linguistic variables play in the formation of
alternative or new communities and the ways in which the social
meanings associated with these linguistic variables change over time.
She investigates this question in the context of Japanese and Korean,
focusing especially on the formation of new communities in the context
of disasters that lead to social (and linguistic) instability.
