日本認知言語学会では、2023年度「認知言語学セミナー」を9月1日（金）に対面とオンラインのハイブリッド形式で開催いたします。
講師はJeannette Littlemore先生（University of Birmingham）で、大学院生・若手研究者向けに入門講義をしてくださる予定です。

※Jeannette Littlemore先生は、Applying Cognitive Linguistics to Second Language Learning and Teaching (2009, Palgrave Macmillan)やMetaphors in the Mind: Sources of Variation in Embodied Metaphor (2019, Cambridge University Press)などの著者であり、比喩の研究でご著名です。本セミナーでは、大学院生・若手研究者向けに、外国語学習・教育と比喩に関する入門講義をしてくださいます。

What do second language learners need to know about metaphor?
概要：
Metaphor, a device through which one idea is expressed in terms of another, is a pervasive phenomenon in language and other modes of expression. It has been shown to be vital in situations ranging from informal conversations to news articles, advertisements, educational interchange, expert discourse, business correspondence, policy documents, doctor/patient interchanges, government communication, legal settings, and industry/client interaction. The reason for this is that metaphor is one of the primary tools for achieving economy of expression, clarity, persuasiveness, politeness, communication of evaluations and emotions. At the same time, the use of metaphor expression has been shown to dramatically increase the potential for misunderstanding in situations where participants lack shared background knowledge or have different views of the world.
In this three-part talk, I outline three areas of research that I have conducted into role played by metaphor in second language learning (and teaching). The first area of research is characterised by a focus on ‘metaphoric competence’, which focuses on individual differences in language learners’ responses to metaphors, which were taken largely out of context. The second area involves more contextualised studies of metaphor comprehension and production by language learners from a range of linguistic backgrounds. The third area of research focuses on areas where metaphor is particularly likely to be important for language learners, and shows how metaphorical meanings vary according to genre and register and differ according to the cultural backgrounds of the interlocutors. The findings from this research have implications for our understanding of what metaphor is and how language learners might best be helped to deal with it.
